Sedaris’ “Standing By”

David Sedaris's "Standing By" is a story that describes what is happening when he has to wait for a delayed flight.  There are multiple actions or conversations that happen when impatient grows and the employees do not want to work anymore, like how one of the bald man said, “None of them want to work...All any of them care about is their next goddam coffee break” (277).  Sedaris shows the emotions of everyone.  He shifts around to listen and look at the people around him, like how he said, “One minute you’re bending to unlace your shoes, and then next thing you know you’re paying fourteen dollars for a fruit cup, wondering. How did I get here?” (Sedaris 276).  Sometimes we don’t even realize what we are doing when we are at the airline for hours.  We, the people become like crazy people; Sedaris says “We’re forever blaming the airline industry for turning us into monsters…But what if this is who we truly are?” (277).When the environment changes, everyone becomes angry and annoyed because we don’t get what we want. This shows that we should be more patient and not push.

  1. I really like how you used to text to come to the conclusion that "everyone becomes angry and annoyed because we don't get what we want." Do you think this is Sedaris' purpose?

What other information might your reader also need to know to understand his essay? Imagine you're telling a friend about it--what else would you include?

  2. Well first off, I would include more to support my thought of Sedaris' purpose. I didn't provide enough details to what his story was about. I focused more on telling what I think Sedaris' purpose was.

Can we revise our previous ones, after you read and comment?

    Thanks.
